In a desert, there is no shortage of water. But what happens when there is no water left? In the arid landscape of a wasteland, a family has to make do with what they have. A mother and father struggle to provide for their children as they ration water from each other's bodies and watch their food supplies dwindle. After all, how long can it be before the family needs one last desperate measure? The answer may surprise you... Many moviegoers have been disappointed with the lack of resolution in most Hollywood films today - so critics say that there ought to be more cinematic endings that achieve conflict through action rather than dialogue. Directed by veteran Hindi filmmaker Tapan Sinha, the film has been compared to Garth Davis' Oscar-winning film based on Shakespeare's "The Bard" based on the work of Australian director Andrew Bovell. The film was shot in deserts of Rajasthan. The lead cast includes Angoori Jyoti, Chitrangada Singh, Rajat Kapoor, Mayank Tewari, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Tripathi and Dilip Tahil. Parched was screened at Toronto International Film Festival in September 2008. It also won the award for best actor for Rajat Kapoor at New York Indian Film Festival 2008. The film was among the movies which were to be screened at the Mumbai Film Festival in 2009. However, it was cancelled as per the orders of Mumbai Police as it had been reported that some people had threatened to disrupt the screening. Parched has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Rajeev Masand of CNN-News18 rated the film 3 out of 5 and stated, "The real revelation in "Parched" is Pankaj Tripathi, a fine actor who delivers a stellar performance. The tension he generates with his eyes and body language is riveting. Sadly, Parched fails to live up to its title, never quite getting you to feel the intensity of what it means to live without water". Saibal Chatterjee from NDTV called it "A compelling portrayal of rural India. A compassionate drama that finds its heart in the right place. The film is beautifully shot, with excellent performances". "Parched" has produced a lot of publicity for Tapan Sinha's next film "Khosla Ka Ghosla", which is also based on desert life in Rajasthan. http://www.dw. cfa1e77820
